Yarrow
Achillea Millefolium
A perennial herb in the Asteraceae family, native to Eurasia, that can now be found widely, from the US to the UK and to China. A single plant can produce several stems with feather-like leaves arranged spirally along the stem with clusters of tiny disk flowers arranged in an umbrella-like inflorescence, and she loves to creep around by her roots and self-sow.
The name Achillea derives from the Greek mythological story of Achilles, in which his mother dipped him into the river Styx by the ankle to protect him from getting wounded in battle. He also carried this herb with him in the battle to treat the wounds of his fellow soldiers. He invariably died later of a wound to his heal, the only place he wasn’t protected. Yarrow has also been called Soldier’s Wound Wort, Arrowroot, Milfoil and Carpenter’s Weed.
This gorgeous ally is all about the blood. She can staunch bleeding and keep a wound from becoming infected just by picking her fresh flowers and leaves and mashing them directly into a wound. Yarrow is Diaphoretic, astringent, stimulant, tonic and a mild aromatic containing antibacterial properties.
Yarrow supports circulation and healthy blood flow, supports digestion, tones blood vessels, stimulates wound healing, is anti-inflammatory, astringent, and reduces fevers. Excellent for treatment of the common cold, moontime cramping and blood flow.
Yarrow is excellent for use as a tea, a tincture, added to wound healing salves and can even repel unwanted insects while attracting beneficial insects.
-Not for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Not to be taken if you are allergic to any member of the Asteraceae family.
tincture
Our Yarrow Tinctures are made with only fresh plant material, either ethically wild-harvested or grown ourselves. We never use dried herbs when making tinctures because the water soluble parts of the herbs are valuable medicine, and we would not want to lose any of the wonderful constituents within. This is part of why the quantities are limited. We make tinctures using the folk method, the long way, with intention, and only during their growing seasons.
